《Today I begin a new life》

Today I shed my old skin which hath, toolong, suffered the bruises of failure and the wounds of mediority.

Today I am born anew and my birthplace is avineyard where there is fruit for all.

Today I will pluck grapes of wisdom fromthe tallest and fullest vines in the vineyard, for these were planted by thewisest of my profession who have come before me,generation upongeneration.

Today I will savor the taste of grapes fromthese vines and verily I will swallow the seed of success buried in each and newlife will sprout within me.

The career I have chosen is laden withopportunity yet it is fraught with heartbreak and despair and the bodies ofthose who have failed, were they piled one atop another, would cast a shadowdown upon all the pyramids of the earth.

Yet I will not fail, as the others, for inmy hands I now hold the charts which will guide through perilous waters toshores which only yesterday seemed but a dream.

Failure no longer will be my payment forstruggle. Just as nature made no provision for my body to tolerate pain neitherhas it made any provision for my life to suffer failure. Failure, like pain, isalien to my life. In the past I accepted it as I accepted pain. Now I reject itand I am prepared for wisdom and principles which will guide me out of theshadows into the sunlight of wealth, position, and happiness far beyond my mostextravagant dreams until even the golden apples in the Garden of Hesperides willseem no more than my just reward.

Time teaches all things to him who livesforever but I have not the luxury of eternity. Yet within my allotted time Imust practice the art of patience for nature acts never in haste. To create theolive, king of all trees, a hundred years is required. An onion plant is old innine weeks. I have lived as an onion plant. It has not pleased me. Now I wouldstbecome the greatest of olive trees and, in truth, the greatest ofsalesman.

And how will this be accomplished? For Ihave neither the knowledge nor the experience to achieve the greatness andalready I have stumbled in ignorance and fallen into pools of self-pity. Theanswer is simple. I will commence my journey unencumbered with either the weightof unnecessary knowledge or the handicap of meaningless experience. Naturealready has supplied me with knowledge and instinct far greater than any beastin the forest and the value of experience is overrated, usually by old men whonod wisely and speak stupidly.

In truth, experience teaches thoroughly yether course of instruction devours men’s years so the value of her lessonsdiminishes with the time necessary to acquire her special wisdom. The end findsit wasted on dead men. Furthermore, experience is comparable to fashion; anaction that proved successful today will be unworkable and impracticaltomorrow.

Only principles endure and these I nowpossess, for the laws that will lead me to greatness are contained in the wordsof these scrolls. What they will teach me is more to prevent failure than togain success, for what is success other than a state of mind? Which two, among athouand wise men, will define success in the same words; yet failure is alwaysdescribed but one way. Failure is man’s inability to reach his goals in life, whatever they may be.

In truth, the only difference between thosewho have failed and those who have successed lies in the difference of theirhabits. Good habits are the key to all success. Bad habits are the unlocked doorto failure. Thus, the first law I will obey, which precedeth all others is --Iwill form good habits and become their slave.

As a child I was slave to my impulses; nowI am slave to my habits, as are all grown men. I have surrendered my free willto the years of accumulated habits and the past deeds of my life have alreadymarked out a path which threatens to imprison my future. My actions are ruled byappetite, passion, prejudice, greed, love, fear, environment, habit, and theworst of these tyrants is habit. Therefore, if I must be a slave to habit let mebe a slave to good habits. My bad habits must be destroyed and new furrowsprepared for good seed.

I will form good habits and become theirslave.

And how will I accomplish this difficultfeat? Through these scrolls, it will be done, for each scroll contains aprinciple which will drive a bad habit from my life and replace it with onewhich will bring me closer to success. For it is another of nature’s laws thatonly a habit can subdue another habit. So, in order for these written words toperform their chosen task, I must discipline myself with the first of my newhabits which is as follows:

I will read each scroll for thirty days inthis prescribed manner, before I proceed to the next scroll.

First, I will read the words in silencewhen I arise. Then, I will read the words in silence after I have partaken of mymidday meal. Last, I will read the words again just before I retire at day’send, and most important, on this occasion I will read the wordsaloud.

On the next day I will repeat thisprocedure, and I will continue in like manner for thirty days. Then, I will turnto the next scroll and repeat this procedure for another thirty days. I willcontinue in this manner until I have lived with each scroll for thirty days andmy reading has become habit.

And what will be accomplished with thishabit? Herein lies the hidden secret of all man’s accomplishments. As I repeatthe words daily they will soon become a part of my active mind, but moreimportant, they will also seep into my other mind, that mysterious source whichnever sleeps, which creates my dreams, and often makes me act in ways I do notcomprehend.

As the words of these scrolls are consumedby my mysterious mind I will begin to awake, each morning, with a vitality Ihave never known before. My vigor will increase, my enthusiasm will rise, mydesire to meet the world will overcome every fear I once knew at sunrise, and Iwill be happier than I ever believed it possible to be in this world of strifeand sorrow.

Eventually I will find myself reacting toall situations which confront me as I was commanded in the scrolls to react, andsoon these actions and reactions will become easy to perform, for any act withpractice becomes easy.

Thus a new and good habit is born, for whenan act becomes easy through constant repetiton it becomes a pleasure to performand if it is a pleasure to perform it is man’s nature to perform it often. WhenI perform it often it becomes a habit and I become its slave and since it is agood habit this is my will.

Today I begin a new life.

And I make a solemn oath to myself thatnothing will retard my new life’s growth. I will lose not a day from thesereadings for that day cannot be retrieved nor can I substitute another for it. Imust not , I will not, break this habit of daily reading from these scrolls and,in truth, the few moments spent each day on this new habit are but a small priceto pay for the happiness and success that will be mine.

As I read and re-read the words in thescrolls to follow, never will I allow the brevity of each scroll nor thesimplicity of its words to cause me to treat the scroll’s message sands of grapes are pressed to fill one jar with wine, and the grapeskin andpulp are tossed to the birds. So it is with these grapes of wisdom from theages. Much has been filtered and tossed to the the pure truth liesdistilled in the words to come. I will drink as instructed and spill not a the seed of success I will swallow.

Today my old skin has become as dust. Iwill walk tall among men and they will know me not , for today I am a new man, with a new life.

A young friend of mine asked me in a letter, “What kind of man should Ibe?” My answer was, “Be a fighter.”

Another friend of mine inquired, “How should I live my life?” Again myanswer was, “Be a fighter.”

The author of In Praise of the Fighter says:

Riding on the ceaseless rushing torrent of life, I should pursue andovertake it so as to create an even greater and deeper torrent of my own.

If I were a lamp, it would be my duty to light up thick darkness. If I werethe sea tide, I would marshal rolling waves to cleanse the beach of allaccumulated filth.

This quotation reflects aptly the state of mind of a lighter.

Fighters are badly needed in our time. But such fighters do not necessarilygo to the battle- field gun in hand. Their weapons are not necessarily r weapons may be knowledge, faith and strong will. They can bring the enemysure death without drawing his blood.

A fighter is always in pursuit of light. Instead of basking in the sunshineunder a clear sky, he holds a burning torch in the darkness of night toilluminate people’s way so that they can continue their journey till they seethe dawn of a new day. It is the task of a fighter to dispel darkness. Insteadof shirking darkness, he braves it and fights the hidden demons and monsterstherein. He is determined to wipe them out and win light. He knows nocompromise. He will keep on fighting until he wins light.

A fighter is perennially young. He is never irresolute or inactive. Heplunges deep into teeming crowds in search of such vermin as flies and venomousmosquitoes. He will fight them relentlessly and refuse to coexist with themunder the same sky. To him, life means nothing but continuous fighting. Heeither survives by winning light, or perishes with his body covered all overwith cuts and bruises. In the course of the struggle, it is the “future” thatserves as the beacon light to him; the “future” gives people hope andinspiration. He will never lose his youthful vigour.

A fighter will never lose heart or despair. He will pile up broken piecesof brick and stone to rebuild a nine-story pagoda on the ruins of failure. Noblows will ever break his will. He will never close his eyes until he hasbreathed his last.

A fighter is always fearless. His steps are firm. Once he has settled on anobjective, he will press right ahead. He is never afraid of being tripped by astumbling block. No obstacles will ever make him change his mind. His eyes willnever be hoodwinked by false appearances. His actions are guided by faith. Hecan endure any hardships or sufferings while striving to attain his chosenobjective. He will never abandon work as long as he is alive.

This is the kind of fighter we now need. He is not necessarily possessed ofsuperhuman capability. He is just an ordinary person. Anyone can be a fighter solong as he has the determination. Hence a few words of mine about “being afighter” to encourage those young people who wander about in a depressed state, not knowing which way to go.
