居庸關以險著稱，大有“一夫當關，萬夫莫開”之勢。春秋戰國時代，燕國扼制此口，時稱“居庸塞”。漢朝時，居庸關城已初具規模。南北朝時，關城與長城相連，此後唐、遼、金、元數朝，居庸都有關城之設。現存的居庸關城，始建於明洪武元年(1368年)，明朱元璋懼怕元順帝捲土重來，撥鉅款修築，增強軍事防禦功能，為居庸關建起水陸兩道關門，南北關門之處都有甕城。關城外南北山險要之處，還築有護城墩6座、烽燧18座等防禦體系。清末以後逐漸荒廢;1992年昌平縣對關城建築進行了全面修復，再現了昔日的雄姿。
