unable to return borrowed book on time

dear kate:

excuse me for my long delaying in returning to you your “robinson crusoe” which i read through with great interest。 i had finished reading the book and was about to return it when my cousin came to see me。 never having seen the book, she was so interested in it that i had to retain it longer。 however, i hope that in view of the additional delight thus afforded by your book, you will overlook my negligence in not returning it sooner。

thanking you again for the loan。

sincerely yours,

tom

never think you will never be detected, when you want to tell a lie. the chances are, sooner or later, your lie witt be found out and it will then expose you to shame. telling a lie is morally wrong. besides, there are many disadvantages lying in the way of a liar. first, he has to have a good memory, lest he contradicts at one time what he said in another.

second, he is always annoyed by his conscience, because he is in constant fear that his falsehood may be found out. third, a liar is never trusted and respected by others. the result may be that his words, even when he speaks the truth, are not believed. fourth and the last, once a person has told a lie, he cannot help telling another in order to conceal the first, and then a third and a fourth, until lying becomes ahabit. after that, he may say something untrue even when he wishes to speak the truth. the disadvantages resulting from telling a lie are too many to be listed. the above are just some of the obvious ones.

if you want to be free from these annoyances, if you want to be a trustworthy person, never tell a lie.

is english not important any more?(英語不再重要?)

recently, the ministry of education has drafted a reform about english, it is said that english will be not the subject that take into account of the college entrance exam, a lot of students feel excited, because they think english will not be their burden. the reform may relieve some students who are week in english, they think they donsquo;t need to spend so much time in learning english, because english is not important any more. the fact is that they get the wrong idea, english still important even though it will be no more considered to be the college entrance exam. the trend is people learning english since they are young, parents pay special attention to the childrensquo;s second language, so most students now are good at english. whatsquo;s more, english is the most widely used language, it can enhance a studentsquo;s competition. so english is still important to learn.

what emerges into our eyes is that there are two young men standing on the stairs of the mountain. the most impressive element is that in the right place crouches a seemingly exhausted adult with a depressed look and a few words, such as “i am tired and i want to give up.”while in the left counterpart stands an energetic adult, who is smiling to his company and passionately encouraging him to continue with the words “don’t do that and we will reach the end with a simple rest”.

in the real life, there is no one who can achieve the remarkable success in whatever he does without persistence. i can come up with no better illustration than the example of thomas edison, a distinguished scientist, who contributes his success to endless pursuing news goals. just as he puts it, “without continuous insistence of the conduct of experiments, i will not be so fortunate to have such a successful performance.” apart from the example of edison, many other great figures in the history also attributed their success to continuous pursuing something more meaningful in their lives.

therefore, as a qualified young people living in modern society, i value persistence as a vital principle in my lives and i am determined to insist on this point in daily life and make full use of the positive effect achieved by persistence.

a lesson from my parents

parents are your first teachers. write a short essay to describe one of instructive lessons you once learned from your parents, including:

(1)描述一件有教育意義的事情;

(2)它對你的影響。

a distance of 500 miles separates my college from my hometown, an old city, where my parents have been living, but my heart has never been away for a single step, because the lesson from them will be a gift of lifetime.

when i was still 15, the laid-offs, or rather untimely retirements, of both my mum and dad, arrived by far earlier than ever expected. moreover, it could be hardly imagined how much their careers meant to them other than earning money.

nevertheless, it would be not long before they managed to get over such a blow. they thus underwent all kinds of odd jobs they could run into, be they dirty or painstaking. that way with sufficient money for my tuition fee and living expenses i went through my three academic years.

now one of them is getting weaker and both older, but the lesson that god only helps those who help themselves they taught me will endure in my mind despite the passage of time.
